"Giving to Gain" and Supporting Women in Local Communities
Celebrating International Women’s Day
Sunday 8th March marks International Women’s Day, a global moment to recognise the achievements, resilience and impact of women everywhere.
This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” encourages everyone to take meaningful action—supporting the women in their lives, lifting others up and helping to build an environment where all people can thrive. Small actions matter, whether it’s championing someone’s idea, offering mentorship or simply acknowledging the women who inspire them.
Putting the Theme Into Action
Here at Chess we recently carried out a foodbank mission across our hubs, and the response showed the very best of our people. Our generosity and teamwork demonstrated the true spirit of Give to Gain.
People from across Chess contributed to foodbanks in their local communities, each providing items that met specific needs. Special recognition goes to Amanda Vaughan, Andy Pettman, Tina Flather, Kerryann Farmer‑Tomblin, Rebecca Riley, Mike Tansey, Kelly Churchill, Cat Gregory and Kate Hill plus many others who gave their time, energy and compassion.
This support is vital. In the UK, around 1 in 5 working‑aged women live in poverty, with rates rising to 45% for single mothers. Donations like these help make a meaningful difference to women and families experiencing hardship.
In Alderley, donations to Hope Central included essential sanitary products—along with sustainable options—plus tinned meals such as soups, pastas and ravioli. People also contributed body sprays and small pamper gifts to offer a moment of care to women who often put their children first.
In Poole, support for Faithworks centred on everyday household staples, including pasta, sauces, minced beef, fruit, personal care items and nappies in a range of sizes, helping families to meet rising daily costs.
Meanwhile, in Burnley, donations to Burnley Together included hygiene items, baby formula and food, nappies and pet supplies. People also added Easter eggs to bring a little joy to local families.
Together, these donations demonstrate a genuine commitment to strengthening local communities and supporting women who may be experiencing hardship. This spirit of giving directly reflects the Chess Blueprint pledge to Play our Part, which sits at the heart of our culture.
More than Just a Day
International Women’s Day is more than a date in the calendar. It is a reminder of the positive impact that comes from uplifting and championing women—at work, at home and across local communities.
