Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust provides inpatient and community-based mental health care for people living in Bolton, the city of Manchester, Salford, and Trafford and a wide range of specialist mental health and substance misuse services across Greater Manchester, the northwest of England and beyond.
The Business Challenge
When GMMH was offered Windows ATP by NHS Digital free of charge, it gave them cause to reconsider their existing IT security setup.
The organisation could either use Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection on its own or use a combination of products to enhance their security posture.
Their key security considerations were data protection, particularly around the 1,500 mobile devices in use, keeping costs down and minimising the input required by the small IT team to manage any solutions.
At Chess, we believe that security collaboration is the future. Organisations will no longer invest in standalone solutions. Instead, products will be able to integrate and ‘speak’ to each other, identifying, analysing and remediating vulnerabilities and attacks. Microsoft, Sophos and LogPoint integrate to provide a seamless experience and fortified security.
GMMH opted to implement multiple Sophos products including Sophos Central, Sophos XG Firewall, Intercept X and Intercept X for Server, Sophos Device Encryption, Sophos Web Protection Advanced and Sophos Mobile Control.
“Sophos was easy to deploy and manage alongside Windows ATP, which is a good product: we chose to complement it with extra elements from Sophos. We have had no issues running the two together. We chose to continue using Sophos because of the features it has that are not in Windows ATP. Plus, it’s well embedded, and our staff all know it and like using it. With Windows ATP and Sophos we are fully protected, and we can prove to auditors that our mobile devices and data are safe – even when the devices are not connected to a network” GMMH IT Security Manager Kevin Orritt explains.
Among the further benefits he mentions are:
- Time savings: Sophos Central picks up any issues quickly, and its dashboard is simple for staff to use
- No formal training required: The IT team have found Sophos to be so intuitive that no training has been needed
- No negative impact on systems: Kevin says that combined, the solutions are lightweight and do not affect users
- Reasonable costs: For the functionality GMMH now has, Kevin believes the cost is “good”
Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) were consulted by Chess and
chose LogPoint as their Security Information Event Management (SIEM) solution provider to bolster Cybersecurity and Compliance in the Trust organisation, counting some 4.750 staff members
across 130 locations.
