Grace Ingham is Head of People Support at Chess and she's been with the business for over 12 years. In her role, she is responsible for performance management, payroll and benefits. Together with her team, she helps to create and maintain the culture that has kept Chess in ‘The Sunday Times Top 100 companies To Work For’ list for over 10 years.

Last Thursday, we attended the Best Companies 2023 National Awards Dinner in London. It was a fantastic occasion and we were wowed by another great set of results! On our 15th year entering the list, we are proud to announce that we retained our top 3 place in all categories, absolutely brilliant news!

Chess is a great place to work because of our People who are without doubt our most valuable asset. Everyone wants to work for a great company but it’s our People working together as One Team who make it so special. I am immensely proud of our people and their commitment to our culture who all contributed to this great achievement.
An award-winning Culture isn’t developed overnight, we nurture and develop this over time. This is through our flexibility, listening to our People through our Cultural Ambassadors and People Surveys. Having understanding and a fantastic benefits package along with a strong leadership team who drive Chess to be a Great Place to Work all of which form part of our secret formula.
Speaking about the achievements, Chess Executive Chairman and Founder David Pollock said:
"Our vision is to build a business we can be proud of as stated in our Blueprint. Easy to say, much harder to deliver. It's something that takes hard work, determination, bravery, constant change, evolution, positive attitude, loads of energy, belief, desire and above all, passion.
Chess is a great place to work because of our great people and we work together as one team to make Chess a great place to be a customer.
I'm so proud of our people and their commitment. I want to thank all our customers, partners and people for their support."
What Makes Chess a Great Place to Work
- Hybrid Work –we look at the individual circumstances of every person and adapt to their needs. Learn more about how we launched and made hybrid work successful here.
- Flexible Hours –we understand our people have commitments outside of work so we encourage flexible working while maintaining the balance of the needs of our people and the needs of our customers.
- Morale and Wellbeing –we use technology to support people to share how they feel and talk to them as part of 1-2-1s every month to support them. We do not encourage overtime as this is a sign that we're under-resourced and we keep track of holidays to ensure our people are taking time off work. Plus, all of our people have an annual wellbeing day they can take when it suits them.
- Our Culture –leadership plays a crucial role in building and maintaining our culture, but we share the responsibility for this with all of our people. Our culture combines many aspects, including charitable giving, creating a positive environmental impact, giving praise and more. We have a Culture Team who are the voice of our people and ensure that we are doing the right thing.
