At Chess, we put our customers at the heart of everything we do. Every one of our people has Customer Passion and Customer Personality Training, to make sure we offer the best possible service. Last year we invested over £44,000 in external training to up-skill our people to provide a greater customer experience. On average 32% of our people attend an internal training session each month to ensure their continuous development.

David established Chess in 1993, named after his two eldest children — Charlie and Jessie.
Chess is Officially the best! It's #1 in The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For list 2018, and has been in the top 100 for the last nine years; 3rd in 2015, 2nd in 2016 and 2017. David's also been awarded 'Best Leader' by The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2017 and 2018 and won the 'Innovation in Business' for his unique happiness training in 2016.
He won EY's UK Technology Entrepreneur of the Year in 2007 and 2008, Telecoms Industry Entrepreneur of the Year 2008, the Institute of Directors 'Cheshire Director of the Year' in 2009 and was made a Deputy Lieutenant of Cheshire in 2012.
His business career began at school, promoting bands to his friends. He quickly upscaled this, moving on to promoting music videos in Los Angeles! Over his career, he's founded many successful businesses, across a range of sectors; from utilities, property, energy, organic food to online marketing.
Today, David’s Chess employs over 550 people throughout the UK, serving over 33,000 business customers in the Information Communications Technology sector and has completed over 100 acquisitions.
In his charitable work David is an active supporter of the Prince's Trust and has been Chairman of the North West Development Committee since 2010. He's a Vice President of East Cheshire Hospice and was a Trustee of Active Cheshire a charity that encourages health and wellbeing from 2012 to 2017.
David also enjoys taking on physical challenges. In 2008 he led a team that won the Prince's Trust Costa Rica Challenge, and in 2009 his team came 2nd out of 42 teams in the Prince's Trust Wild UK Challenge. In 2011 and 2012 his team won The Prince's Trust Mersey to Tyne Challenge. In 2012 he summited Mont Blanc and Kilimanjaro in 2013.
Mark graduated from the University of Aston Business School with a 1st Class Combined Honours Degree in Business Studies, receiving the Vauxhall Prize for Academic Excellence. After university Mark joined an Accountancy practice in Chester and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1999, winning the North Wales and Chester 1st prize Order of Merit.
Mark swapped practice for industry in 2000 and joined Edmundson Electrical Limited as a Project Accountant, progressing to Financial Controller. 2008 saw Mark join Chess as Financial Controller, achieving promotion to the main Board as Financial Director in 2010 and to Chief Financial Officer in 2018. He is responsible for Finance, Credit Control, Billing, Revenue Assurance, Commercial and Legal functions.
Hobbies outside of work include keeping fit, listening to music, watching movies and most importantly spending time with his family.
Stephen is an experienced telecoms and IT professional with over 25 years industry experience. After graduating from the University of Manchester with a degree in English, Stephen started his career with Lister and Co PLC working for them for 12 years, rising to the position of Head of IT.
Stephen then set up Hoodpoint Communications, specialising in providing business phone systems and ran the business for 8 years until it was sold to Chess in 2005. Stephen stayed on at Chess as Head of Business Development and was made Managing Director in 2012, steering the company to its best ever financial results. Stephen is a father of 2 and lives in Cheshire.
I am proud to work with a great team of people who strive every day to make chess a great place to work and a great place to be a customer. The thing I enjoy the most is watching my team maximise their potential by working hard, having the right attitude and energy, continually embracing change, and most of all having fun while they do it.
Warren spent his early career in the motor industry, working in sales and sales management positions for BMW. He then entered the telecoms industry in 1995 and joined Chess via an acquisition in 2004, becoming the businesses Group Sales Director. Warren is responsible for all sales divisions within Chess that includes Web-Sales, Account Development, Corporate and Wholesale.
An avid cyclist, Warren has completed many endurance events for the thrill of the challenge and to raise money for charities. At weekends he can be found cycling in the Peak District however has just taken on the renovation of a 250 year old cottage which he fears will restrict his time on the bike!
Richard is a prolific dealmaker with a record of more than 200 transactions (M&A, IPOs, JVs including cross border) as a “corporate advisor” within the industry as Chairman and Director of private and listed companies. With a highly entrepreneurial approach, Richard has been instrumental in formulating Chess’ strategy for growth in turnover from £4m to £75m over the past 10 years as a result of bank-supported acquisition activity.
In 2013 Richard supported The East Cheshire Hospice by racing 1026 miles from Newbury to Budapest as part of the Gamma Ball Rally – under the condition that the racing vehicle was worth less than £500.
When not busy delivering strategic growth for Chess, Richard spends time enjoying his passion for Modern British Art, skiing and tennis.
Roger is a former investment banker with some 30 years’ experience of working in the City, predominantly for Rothschild the global investment bank. He has extensive experience of mid-market businesses in the UK regions where he was Head of Rothschild’s Birmingham Office. Roger holds a BA (Hons) and MA in Engineering Science from Oxford University. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Andersen & Co in London and is a Fellow of the ICAEAW. Roger’s City career was focused on advising businesses at Board level on all aspects of corporate finance including strategic matters, fundraising, mergers and acquisitions, IPOs and restructurings. He has worked in all industry sectors including ICT.
Roger is Managing Director of Antrobus Capital Partners Limited, a real estate and corporate investment and advisory firm, which assists medium sized businesses with all aspects of property and finance.
Roger enjoys devoting a proportion of his time to local good causes, including community initiatives and sports clubs such as Hartford Tennis Club where he has been Treasurer.
Having worked in the Telecoms and ICT industry for over 23 years in various Sales and Sales Management roles for the likes of Vodafone, Virgin Media, Oracle and Daisy, Russell brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Senior Management Team at Chess.
With a passion for Sales and Service Excellence Russell is responsible for setting the strategy for Enterprise Sales across Group, along with managing our team of Enterprise Account Directors who build strong, trusted, long term relationships with our Enterprise clients.
With 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, Keith has held leadership positions in various sectors. Now leading the Business sales team, he has overall leadership responsibility and accountability for the sales growth of Chess’ unified products, focusing primarily in delivering tailored solutions to bigger sized companies.
Keith specialises in technical programming of phone systems, customer account management, and internal and external operational management. Keith is a big fan of Manchester United football club and he also enjoys playing poker.
Andy joined Chess in 2015 and is responsible for the commercial governance, vendor relationships and products and service strategy for the group. He has years of experience operating in Leadership and Board positions in both FTSE 100 and private equity backed businesses, focused primarily on telecoms, IT and Cloud service providers.
Andy recently completed a 15,000 ft parachute jump for charity alongside regularly running to raise money for East Cheshire Hospice.
Anne has been with Chess since May 1994 and has worked in various functions across the business before moving into Human Resources, initially as HR Manager before becoming People Support Director in 2005 having studied for her CIPD qualification at Stockport College. Anne has been responsible for the implementation and ongoing management of all of the general HR functions at Chess including recruitment and selection, performance management, learning and development, and benefits.
Anne has one grown-up daughter and her interests include youth work and walking her three dogs.
Gavin has been with Chess since August 2016, coming from an acquisition that helped formulate our cybersecurity practice.
Gavin has been instrumental in growing the managed services team to cope with expanding business demands. Gavin is heavily involved in implementing and maintaining the industry standard ISO27001 framework for Chess which shows the organisation's ongoing commitment to information security excellence. The team has also been successful in achieving CREST accreditation for Penetration Testing.
Chess, under Gavin’s directorship, have implemented a number of large customer deals, including a large global supermarket customer where permanent staff are based onsite backed up by the managed services team providing round the clock cybersecurity protection.
Emma joined the Chess Family in 2006 as part of the Customer Service Team. Her passion for delivering quality service and putting customers at the heart of everything she did saw her progress on her Chess journey from Customer Service Advisor to Customer Service Director.
Emma is passionate about making Chess ‘a great place to be a customer’ and is continually looking at ways to make the customer experience even better. As Head of Customer Service, she guides her people to deliver exceptional service and support and immerses herself wholeheartedly into raising standards and improving processes to get it right first time for our customers.
Outside of the Chess Family, Emma loves to spend time with her friends and family, especially her little boy Eddie, listening to live music, going to festivals and getting out on her bike. Emma is adventurous at heart, including taking part in a skydive to raise money for charity, and if it wasn’t for the windy weather would have bungeed in the Grand Canyon on her last trip!
Her Chess Family would say that Emma is caring, compassionate and always has a smile on her face. Emma simply loves being around happy people and luckily her role gives her the opportunity to make her customers and colleagues smile.
Tam has worked with digital technologies since the early nineteen nineties and brings a wealth of sector experience. He has designed and managed innovative projects for a diverse range of organisations in education, local government, health and leisure, the voluntary sector as well as numerous SMEs and corporate clients.
A specialist in aligning technology solutions with business goals, Tam has successfully led transformation initiatives that deliver operational benefits and enable strategic aims and objectives to be realised. His approach is informed by a keen interest in the ways that technologies and people can work within a solution design to create more effective, efficient and productive ways of working.
Tam's unconventional formative years were spent travelling on a sailing boat, learning at first hand the importance of teamwork, risk management and developing the capacity to connect and collaborate with others across cultural differences. The great outdoors continues to be a source of inspiration and away from the office you'll find him exploring the many footpaths and trail-running routes of his Calderdale back yard.
With 23 years’ experience in the Telecoms industry, Kerri joined Chess through the acquisition of Avenir Telecom in 2014. With the majority of her career based within the Service and Operations arena Kerri always puts the Partner at the heart of her decision making. Building strong relationships with the mobile networks, o2, EE and Vodafone, allowing our Distribution business to work closely and effectively to support our Partners and their customers. A focus within this area is the Customer Satisfaction Index, which Kerri successfully lead us to achieve for two consecutive years. Kerri strives to deliver an ease of transaction for Partners, through working with our Partner Support team, updating and improving systems and processes continually.
Outside of Chess, proud mum of one, Kerri plays hockey for a local club, as well as a coach of the Junior section.
After initially starting a career as a veterinary nurse studying at Battersea dogs home, Helen began her career at TMS in 2005 as an administrator. Having worked in most areas of the business over the years she became the Operations Director in 2014. Chess purchased the TMS business in 2018 to strengthen it's partner proposition.
With 14 years experience in the telecommunications industry, Helen has a vast knowledge of the Partner, billing and the wholesale arena.
Helen is passionate about working closely with partners, building strong and lasting relationships. Helen is proud to work with a great team of people who share her passion to provide exceptional customer service, who enjoy and learn from the challenges created by growth; keeping our partners at the heart of our decision making.
Originally from Bolton Helen now lives in Abingdon with her partner and 10 year old son. Outside of the Chess family Helen enjoys spending time with her family, is an avid Bastille fan, enjoys a spa day all washed down with a rare steak and a fine red wine!

Chess acquires two businesses in the communications technology sector; Frontier Voice & Data and StoneHouse Logic.
Bringing 30 years experience Frontier helped around 2,000 businesses realise their growth ambitions. StoneHouse supports its customers in maximising their productivity and profitability by providing IT systems, services and software.
The two acquisitions bring more than 2,200 customers and an additional £7.2m in revenues.
Named a Top UK Education Partner for Sophos, the Foursys’ team of experts service customers across the UK and have 20 years’ experience delivering cybersecurity consultancy to public sector, SMB, corporate, and enterprise organisations.

In a move to strengthen our ICT proposition Chess acquired Lanway. Lanway provided a full range of hosted and cloud solutions, ICT product supply and installation, storage, managed services, networking infrastructure, data security, professional services, business continuity, unified communications and systems management. This acquisition took Chess people to over 550, maximizing the talent, knowledge, experience and skill set within the business and strengthening our ICT, network and mobile capabilities.
Continuing our buy-and-build growth strategy, we acquired leading Scottish Microsoft Partner and specialists in bespoke software design, development and support, IRW Systems. This resulted in the formation of Chess Digital and allowed us to be uniquely positioned to deliver a range of consulting and software services to our existing and new customers and partners. This foundation is essential for enabling the next wave of technological change for customers focusing on the transition to cloud-based technologies and applications.

With the formation of Chess Partner Services, we purchased the UK airtime division of Avenir Telecom Group. With their excellent reputation across the industry, this offered a real opportunity for partner and mobile growth, adding knowledge and expertise to our business.

In 2010 we decided to take our commitment to supporting our community and the environment to the next level by acquiring a BSI Environmental Standard. This accreditation is given to companies that want to manage their environmental responsibilities and make their day-to-day operations more sustainable.
In 2010 we acquired Shaftesbury Systems, giving our existing Wholesale customers the ebillz billing solution and allowing us a strategic growth opportunity by offering our award-winning telecoms services to their customers.
Reflecting our outstanding growth, Chess is featured in The Sunday Times Fast Track list for the first time. The Sunday Times Fast Track 100 league table ranks Britain’s 100 private companies with the fastest-growing sales over their latest three years.
After 12 years of growing and acquiring companies that buy into our ethos, we decided that if we carried on expanding, we wanted to make sure we protected all that we wanted to be as a business. We needed a plan.
For six months, we worked with a business growth consultant. During that period, we took the business on a journey to establish who we were and who we wanted to be. We talked to everyone, ran workshops, did surveys and took absolutely everything on board. What came out of that was our first Our Blueprint for Success.
Investing in People for over 20 years. Culture, opportunity and leadership — these standards epitomise Chess and in 1995 the foundation was laid when we received the Investors in People accreditation.
Born in 1993, Chess is the invention of CEO, David Pollock. He’s so passionate about Chess that he christened the business after his first two children, Charlie and Jess.
Originally a utilities reseller, Chess started out in water, then moved into gas, then electricity. In the late nineties, with deregulation in the industry, we started focusing on telecoms, purchasing fixed-line, mobile and broadband telecoms products from operators such as BT and Cable & Wireless, reselling to 10,000 small and medium-sized businesses, including Sale Sharks rugby club and Bargain Booze.
