To introduce you to the new Sales Director, we asked Oliver 10 questions that delve into his role, responsibilities, past experiences within the industry, why he’s passionate about our Partners and the expertise he will bring to Chess Partner.

 

How did you start your career in Telecoms?

To be honest I rather fell into the telecoms market some 10 years ago, with Vodafone. My career prior to that point had been varied, I spent time with British Sugar, Mars Snack food and latterly IGT (International Gaming Technology). The crunch decision came when I was asked to relocate to Las Vegas. Vegas is great for a 4-day trip but living there I think would have blown my mind and not been conducive to a family life! Telecoms seemed to be a vibrant industry and Vodafone were a market-leading company to learn from.

 

What is your main expertise?

I am not sure I have a specific expertise, but I think my strength is having the drive and attitude to want to do the best I can every day. Not really expertise but more of an attitude to life, which seems to help me deliver results.

 

What are your initial thoughts about working at Chess?

I do truly believe that in this industry (where we are all Partners) people make the difference and if the team you work with are passionate about what they do, understand what is expected of them and they feel empowered to make a difference then this is the secret. The people I work with at Chess tick all these boxes and I think this is the secret to Chess’ business success. The right attitude can overcome most hurdles that we all face in business.

 

What is the best piece of professional advice you've ever received?

Don’t just let results happen to you. Plan for them and set yourself clear goals. Writing down those goals makes you 42% more likely to achieve them and telling someone else about them increases likelihood of success by 78%.

 

What are you passionate about?

Being a good father and achieving a positive work life balance. I have become aware how important my role is as a father of my two young children. I want them to feel supported and guided as they grow up and I am passionate about helping them in any way I can to be successful in chasing their future dreams and ambitions.

 

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?

My two children, Albert (5) and Martha (2), certainly keep me busy and I love spending time with my family and seeing them happy. Other than that, I am a keen horse rider and regularly compete in the sport of eventing. I also love competitive sport of all kinds and will give most a go!

 

How do you plan to improve Chess Partner?

My ambition is for Chess to support our Partners by making it simple for them to deliver a great experience for their Customers.  I want to strengthen relationships with the right Partners and work collaboratively with the networks to ensure Chess are positioned to be an important part of the value chain. I am also keen for Chess to be flexible in their approach to partnering so we have a commercial and operational model that can be tailored to meet Partner and market needs.

 

What do you think the key to business success is? 

I'm not sure there is a single method or formula you can apply to make a business successful. I think the ingredients are: A leader with a vision, a clear purpose, a relevant market opportunity and a team who can be agile in meeting customer needs and are all committed to go the extra mile to satisfy their customers.

 

What is the most exciting thing you are currently working on?

4 weeks into my career with Chess everything is new and exciting. Probably the most exciting part of my job is being in a position where I genuinely feel that I can, with my team, make a positive difference for both our Partners and Chess as a business.

 

What do you see for the future of Chess Partner?

To provide a tailored and effective partnering model. Chess will show continued support to our Partners by providing access to market leading products and services to enable Customers to meet their business goals.
